Price : Rp 350.000,-
Age range : 3-6th

Description :

Parents have a new ally in their constant struggle to get children to eat healthily. The abc Fridge Fun set tackles the tricky job of making proper food fun by presenting a variety of healthy foodstuffs as colourful plastic pieces that fit into the fridge unit.

Select from the three information categories – food, colours and letters – and you can get a soundbite of information on the piece that is currently inserted in the fridge.

In this way, the lemon piece can prompt three responses: ‘A lemon has a sour taste’, ‘This is a yellow lemon’ and ‘L says “luh” ’. You can also play games such as finding a food that starts with the letter ‘e’.

There is a piece for each letter of the alphabet and they are both tough and attractively designed. As a bonus, both the fridge and the 26 pieces are magnetic, so they can stick to a fridge door, increasing the chances of children having a little play when they pop to the fridge for a snack – and possibly even persuading them to opt for some juice instead of a fizzy drink.

The game is aimed at children from three years of age, although we found that much younger children were still captivated by the colourful pieces and the engrossing process of opening the fridge door, inserting a piece and closing the door again.

You may still want to stick to the suggested age range, however, because the constant opening and closing that very young children find so fascinating does prompt some very repetitive responses from the fridge. Once you’ve heard ‘Let’s chill out another time. Bye!’ 15 times within the space of a minute you’re ready for a break…

We also found that children towards the top end of the suggested age range lost interest fairly quickly.

Adults will like the idea of their youngsters learning worthwhile snippets of information about the food they eat (or the food we wish they would eat in some cases) and there are educational benefits in areas of visualisation and memory, cognitive development and language development. The bright, colourful design is also very appealing.

Imaginative types, by the way, might like to contact VTech with ideas for the ‘x’, ‘q’ and ‘z’ pieces, which are currently left blank…
